Applications

MRI offers many advantages over other molecular imaging tools. It is noninvasive, requires no radiation, and delivers excellent resolution and anatomical information.

Target Visualization™ Technology (TVT) makes this powerful diagnostic technique even better. TVT creates imaging pharmaceuticals that increase contrast and promise to provide the physician with greater diagnostic confidence. Vasovist® uses TVT to target albumin in the blood and make it bright in an MR image, allowing the detection of aneurisms and stenoses. EP-2104R uses TVT to target fibrin in blood clots, potentially improving the detection of pulmonary emboli and carotid and coronary thrombi.

EPIX Pharmaceuticals is studying TVT to detect conditions such as vascular disease, coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, myocardial perfusion, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, blood clots in the coronary and carotid arteries, breast cancer and female sexual arousal dysfunction.

In the future, other markers may be targeted to reveal information about specific diseases that existing diagnostic tools cannot detect.
